Compress Video & Photo—ByteKit

ByteKit compresses, converts and trims video, photo and audio on your iPhone or iPad. It
reads the source file, works out the settings needed for the size you asked for,
encodes with the device's hardware encoder, measures the result, and encodes
again if the file came out over target. Nothing is uploaded.

TARGET SIZE

Ask for a size and the app works backwards from it. Container overhead and the
audio share are subtracted, the video bitrate is derived from what is left, and
the encoded file is measured. If it came out over target, it is encoded again
closer to the number.

Resolution is never lowered, so below a certain point a file cannot get smaller.
The slider stops there and says why, instead of failing later.

COMPARISON

A sample of the source is encoded at your current settings and shown next to the
original frame, with a divider you can drag. It is a real encode, not a preview
filter, so the artefacts you see are the artefacts you get. The same comparison
is shown afterwards on the finished file.

PRESETS

Six presets, each carrying one limit that binds: 16 MB and 20 MB for sharing and
mail attachments, 1080p and 4K for resolution, three minutes for length, and a
two-gigabyte ceiling. The tile shows whichever limit applies. If a preset would
shorten the clip, it says so before the job starts rather than trimming quietly.

VIDEO

Compress to a target size. Convert between MP4 and MOV, H.264 and HEVC. Trim
losslessly, aligned to the nearest keyframe. Join clips end to end. Rotate by
90°, written as metadata with no pixel re-encoded. Change speed from 0.5× to 4×.
Remove the audio track without touching the picture. Make a GIF with no duration
limit. Grab a still frame.

PHOTO

Compress to a target size, resize by long edge, convert between HEIC, JPG and
PNG. EXIF orientation is applied to the pixels, so a rotated photo does not come
out sideways.

AUDIO

Extract audio as M4A, WAV, AIFF or CAF, from an audio file or from a video. Make
a ringtone in M4R. There is no MP3 output: iOS provides no MP3 encoder, and M4A
gives better sound at the same size.

BATCH AND QUEUE

Files are processed one after another. Finished files are kept if you cancel or
the app closes, and the queue picks up where it stopped.

AUTOMATION

Shortcuts actions on iPhone, iPad and Mac. On iPhone and iPad a job can also be
started from the share sheet or from a Control Center control.

SUBSCRIPTION

Subscriptions renew automatically unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the
end of the period. Payment is charged to your Apple Account. Manage or cancel in
Settings.

PRIVACY

Files are not uploaded. The app does not read your photo library; it receives
only the items you select in the system picker, and asks for photo permission
only to save finished files back. Settings sync through iCloud; media, history
and outputs do not.
