Description
The leasing office asks for a phone number. The bank wants to text a code to one. The delivery driver calls from the curb, the clinic confirms the appointment by message, and the classmate you met this morning says just text me. A semester, a posting or a month with family in the United States is simpler when the number you hand over is an American one.
That is what the voice plans are for. Each one puts a second line on the iPhone with a United States number of its own, call minutes and text messages beside the data, and the app gives them a tab of their own, Data + Calls. Once the eSIM is on the phone, its number sits on the eSIM screen ready to be tapped and copied into whatever form asked for it, with the minutes and texts you have left printed underneath. Your own SIM never leaves the phone, so your own number keeps its calls, texts and messaging apps.
If all the phone needs is internet, the ordinary plans do that and nothing else: fixed data plans by the week or by the month, day plans set to any length from 1 to 30 days, and unlimited plans whose daily high-speed allowance is followed by a lower speed for the rest of that day. Everything here is prepaid and bought once. No contract, and nothing that renews itself while you are busy.
What is left runs live in the app: the data, and on a voice plan the minutes and the texts beside it. While an eSIM still has time on it you can add more in the app, whatever plan it carries; once its time is up it takes nothing more.
Signing in is Apple, Google or a code e-mailed to you, and there is no password to invent. Apple Pay or a card pays for it, and the eSIM lands in the account a short while later. Installing is one tap, a QR code, or the details keyed in by hand, and the phone needs an internet connection while that happens, so it belongs on Wi-Fi before the flight, with the line switched on after you land. One account holds several eSIMs at a time, this semester's beside last summer's.
The data runs on United States networks in the States, on 4G/LTE and on 5G wherever the mast carries it, across the country. Canada is never part of a United States plan: crossing the border is the separate USA & Canada plan, fixed data or day plans, and North America, the Caribbean, Europe and Asia are regional plans of their own.
Plans change. An eSIM you never installed, with no data used, comes back in full if you ask within 15 days of buying it, and no one asks for a reason.
Check the phone first: an eSIM-capable iPhone XS or newer, free of a carrier lock, on iOS 15 or later. An iPad with a cellular plan and eSIM support takes one too.
We answer in the app, on WhatsApp and at support@usaesim.app. More at usaesim.app.
And when the stay is counted in semesters rather than weeks, one voice plan runs a full year: the same American number on the phone from the first week of class to the flight home.
Each subscription will automatically renew 3 days before the expiration date for
