The Support Package includes static 'support libraries' that you can add to your Android application in order to use APIs that are either not available for older platform versions or that offer 'utility' APIs that aren't a part of the framework APIs. The goal is to simplify your development by offering more APIs that you can bundle with your application so you can worry less about platform versions.

About android support library usage dataOur market share and usage data is crowd-sourced. This means that we have 100% coverage of popular apps, and the less popular an app is, the more likely we won't have detected its libraries. However, this doesn't invalidate our statistics, because the power law property of app downloads means that the vast majority of all downloads is generated by a relatively small number of popular apps, which we all cover.
