BitDojo: Learn to Code

BitDojo teaches software development on your phone. It starts at zero and assumes no prior knowledge. Lessons, flashcards and glossary work without a connection.

The interface is in English or German, and it follows your device. The learning material does not: every lesson, flashcard and glossary entry is German text, and so are the course titles. This listing says so before you install, not after. If you do not read German, this app is not for you.

The app comes with 11 courses. The foundation course "Wie das Web funktioniert" is free and needs no account. The others build on it:

Reading, not watching
A lesson is text, not a video. Six to eight minutes each, twelve to fourteen in the foundation course. The learning goal sits up front, terms appear as boxes inside the text, and every answer stays hidden until you have answered yourself.

A course is a sequence, not a copy
All courses draw on the same lesson library. Finish a lesson in one course and it is finished in every other. Two paths through the same topic cannot drift apart, because there is only one text.

Everything ships with the app
Lessons, flashcards and glossary are bundled. On a train, in a basement or on a plane, nothing changes. Only the audio episodes are streamed.

Flashcards that schedule themselves
Repetition follows SM-2 with learning steps in minutes. What you miss comes back in a minute, what you know comes back in days. At most twelve new cards are started per day, so the reviews two weeks later do not all land on the same evening.

A quiz after the lesson
There are 664 questions, each tied to its lesson. Getting one wrong is not a failure; the card simply returns sooner.

Listening instead of reading
The modules are covered by 36 audio episodes, 5 hours and 38 minutes in total. Playback continues when the screen turns off, so it works in the car and on foot. Of those, 2 episodes play without an account. The audio is machine narrated, and every episode says so at the start.

Usable without an account
The foundation course with 8 lessons is open. Progress and card state stay on the device and reach no server as long as no account is signed in.

Access to the remaining courses
The remaining courses need a BitDojo subscription: €9.99 a month or €99.90 a year, with the first seven days free. It is not sold inside the app; it is bought on bitdojo.de. Without it, a paid lesson shows its first section.
