PING BUG UPDATE:
I have finally tracked down the ping error some users have been experiencing.
Apparently Java and the ICMP protocol (ping) have never played nice together.
The Android OS uses the Java implementation of isReachable to ping. The isReachable method does not use the ICMP protocol, but rather uses the slow TCP version of ECHO on port 7 to see if a system is available.
Consequently, as a result of the UDP/TCP port 7 check, some systems cannot be pinged. If you cannot get a ping monitor to work, it IS NOT bMonitor. It is a limitation of both Java and the Android API. The only other option in Java and the Android SDK is to write a custom ping routine using the C/C++ NDK libraries. However, that would require too much time for a free application.
Having said that, I have decided that I will leave the ping routine in place because it will work for some people. However, if too many people leave negative feedback about ping not working for them, I am going to remove that feature from the application.
Things to check if ping is not working for you: - Make sure your server is up.
- Download "Terminal Emulator" from the market. This is a free command line tool. Try pinging your system using this. If it does not ping using this tool, it will not ping in bMonitor.
- Try pinging your system from a workstation. If it does not ping from your workstation, it will not ping in bMonitor.
- If you are using the domain name in the host box, use the IP address to eliminate any DNS issues.
- Check for any typos in the configuration. I have literally had hundreds of users complain ping does not work only to point out a typo in their configuration.
I cannot stress this enough. If you have eliminated all these possibilities and you still cannot get a ping monitor to work, it IS NOT bMonitor. Your system simply cannot be pinged using the isReachable method of the Android SDK. Try using a port monitor instead.
If you feel I am wrong, I would ask that you not give negative feedback, but rather uninstall bMonitor and try one of the other free and excellent server monitors available on the market.
