Crescent Days

Crescent Days is a moon phase calendar that works out the Moon for any date from 1900 to 2100, right on your phone.

The first screen shows the Moon as it is now: a drawn disc with the lit and dark parts in the right proportion, the phase name, how much of the disc is lit, the moon age in days, and how long until the next full moon and the next new moon. Step a day or an hour at a time to watch the Moon change, then tap Now to return to the live view.

The calendar shows a whole month with a small phase disc for every day. The days of the new moon, first quarter, full moon and last quarter are tagged, so the rhythm of the month is easy to read. Tap a day to see its phase, illumination and moon age, the exact time of a principal phase if one falls on it, and open that day on the main screen. Arrows move by month and by year.

The phases screen lists the next eight principal phases with their dates and times in your time zone and a countdown to each. Below it, every full moon of a chosen year appears with its traditional folklore name, such as Wolf Moon, Harvest Moon or Cold Moon, and a blue moon, the second full moon in one calendar month, is flagged.

Phase times are calculated with standard astronomical algorithms and usually agree with published tables to within a minute or two; illumination is accurate to about one percent. Choose the northern or southern hemisphere and every phase disc in the main view, calendar and lists turns to match how the Moon looks where you are. The settings also hold a 12 or 24 hour clock and the first day of the week, and a short guide explains each phase name in plain English.
