Description
GrayZone is a professional spot meter inspired by the Zone System. Measure light exactly where you choose and get precise exposure guidance for highlights, shadows, and midtones. Ideal for complex lighting and critical exposure situations, analogue or digital.
IMPORTANT: in order to properly work with your device, the first time the app must be calibrated by the user with the tool included.
Zone System Mode Fast spot metering with Zone System logic. Tap the area you want to measure and receive accurate exposure guidance for tonal placement.
GrayZone reads light where you decide — not where your camera guesses.
Built by Max of max&douglas — professional photographer with 25 years in editorial and advertising photography.
Direct Exposure Control Set ISO before metering, like a dedicated light meter. Instant precise combinations of shutter speed and aperture. Exposure lock with AE LOCK. Half-stop support for finer control. MANUAL mode with over/underexposure scale.
Essential Interface Live preview in your sensor's native ratio. Shows only what you need. Nothing else.
Complete Privacy No ads. No subscriptions. No photos saved. No data collected or transmitted.
For manual shooters — on film or digital. It does not replace your camera. It works alongside it.
Recent changes: UI refinements and performance improvements. The histogram is now always visible in the live view, including during Zone Mode and when adjusting exposure settings. The Auto/Manual selector has been redesigned as two independent buttons for a cleaner, more intuitive feel. Updated to the latest Android SDK.

I can't get over how brilliant this app is! The exposure values it gives for a particular scene under shoot are 'bob' on. It works using Ansel's Zone system, recording five zones. It then displays the exposure along with the range of the scene. For the price it's definitely an app for every serious photographer's tool bag, especially if you're into large format, film photography. It also delivers for digital photographers whereby analogue lenses are used in conjunction with a DSLR.

To be truly useful should allow you to set your reference zone and show exposure and other zones in a relation to that. For film, I want to be able to set my reference zone to zero or one and then have the exposure show me what's needed for the targeted point to be placed in that reference zone. For digital same thing but the reference zone should be 9 or 10. Reset button isn't visible when they Samsung fold is closed. Overall needs some work.
