Iceland at Night

Iceland at Night tells you when and where to look for the northern lights in Iceland. See tonight's aurora forecast and where the sky is clear, then watch the sky live from aurora cameras.

The app comes from the team behind icelandatnight.is. Sævar Helgi Bragason is an astronomy educator, has presented science programs on RÚV, and co-wrote the book Iceland at Night. Gísli Már Árnason is an astrophotographer who leads stargazing at Hótel Rangá. Both have watched the night sky over Iceland for decades.

Tonight's outlook
Open the app and read the chance of aurora in Iceland tonight and in the next two hours, in plain words. The outlook reads live solar wind data and the magnetic readings at the Leirvogur Magnetic Observatory near Reykjavík.

The map
Start on the aurora map: a globe with the aurora oval. Zoom in to Iceland for hour-by-hour cloud cover, recent satellite images, and the weather at towns and sights around the country. Drag back through the night to see how the oval moved, or ahead to see where the clouds go. Weather warnings from the Icelandic Met Office show at the top of the map.

Aurora cameras
Watch the sky live from aurora cameras in Iceland. Each night becomes a timelapse, and the archive keeps the past week, so you can replay a night you slept through and save the nights you like.

Free notifications
Get a notification when tonight looks good, when the chance of aurora rises for the next two hours, or when NOAA issues a geomagnetic alert. NOAA notifications come at most once a night.

Iceland at Night Pro
Pro sends a notification when an aurora camera you follow sees aurora in the sky. It also sends an "Aurora now" notification as soon as the magnetic readings in Iceland show aurora activity rising. Pick the week pass for your trip: 7 days of Pro that do not renew. Monthly and annual subscriptions are also available. Pro hides sponsored content, and you can turn it back on in settings.

Plan your night
Find northern lights tours, car rental and stories from icelandatnight.is, and short notes from the team on nights worth watching.

Space weather in detail
If you want the numbers, the app has them: solar wind speed and density, the direction of the magnetic field (Bz), magnetometer readings, the geomagnetic forecast, and the Sun itself, with flares, sunspots, coronal holes and coronal mass ejections. Press and hold a chart to read any value. The meteor showers screen lists the coming showers and their peak nights.

Privacy
The app sends no analytics and does not track you. Your position stays on your phone. An account is optional: sign in with Google to keep your saved nights across your devices.

Languages
The app is in English, Icelandic, German, French, Spanish, Polish and Chinese (Simplified).

Subscriptions
Payment is charged to your Google Play account when you confirm the purchase. Monthly and annual subscriptions renew automatically until you cancel them. You can cancel at any time in Google Play, under Payments and subscriptions. The week pass gives 7 days of Pro and does not renew.
