Trail Craft: Real Off-Road 4x4

Drive famous 4x4 trails rebuilt from lidar.

The trails in Trail Craft are the real thing. We traced the lines drivers actually take, then built every obstacle from government airborne laser surveys, accurate to about 10 cm. If you've driven it, you'll know it. If you haven't, this is how it really is.

REAL TRAILS, MEASURED BY LASER
• Hell's Revenge, Fins and Things, and Poison Spider and Golden Spike in Moab, Utah
• Black Bear Pass, on the shelf road above Telluride, Colorado
• Ma'ale HaGehinom in Israel, recreated from first-hand accounts
• Six more trails rebuilt whole from their surveys, from the Sierra Nevada to the California dunes, out to the real horizon
• Hell's Gate drops about 19 m into its V-notch and climbs out at the real 30°
• Every ledge and notch sits on a 25 cm ground surface made from millions of laser points

THE CHALLENGE COURSE
A complete obstacle and terrain course: twenty stages in five tiers, Basics, Traction, Clearance, Rock and Mastery. Water crossings, mud bogs, sand bowls and slip faces, log crossings, a rock garden, a V-notch, ledge staircases, a wheel-eater crack, a waterfall and a shelf road with switchbacks. Damage the truck, roll it, drown the engine or leave the course and the stage resets. Master each one, then drive all twenty back to back.

REAL 4x4 PHYSICS
• Every truck has real mass, suspension travel and tyre grip
• Low range (4L), 4H and 2H, plus front and rear lockers
• See the weight on every tyre as a wheel lifts off the rock
• Links, shocks and axle shafts bend and break when you hit too hard. Careful crawling never breaks a part
• A spotter gives one hint at a time. You still do the driving
• Three stars for a clean run: finish, no body contact, no wheelspin
• Replays with trackside cameras and commentary captions
• Real recorded engine sound, and tyres crunching on gravel, dirt and sand

No off-road experience needed. The Proving Ground has sixteen stations, one for each kind of obstacle, to learn the basics. Experienced 4x4 owners still get real choices: the line, low range and lockers.
