The term "kebaya" comes from the word "abaya". On the island of Java, kebaya began to be worn mainly by all women of the aristocracy along with the influx of the influence of the Islamic religion, to the point that Javanese women who used to wear kemben until the Majapahit era, replaced it with more closed clothing.
The most interesting acceleration occurred. The exotic decorating habits were like in the days of Ken Dedes, creating a kebaya even though it covered the body more, still being cut and sewn to follow a beautiful woman's curves. Although both are closed to the ankles, the appearance of the kebaya is far from the opposite of the abaya, a Middle Eastern women's clothing that is completely loose and closed. Meanwhile, in Peninsular Malaysia, Island of Sumatra, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Ternate, Maluku and NTB, the kebaya is already known in its many variations like the clothes of brackets and long kebaya that are cut in a straight line and are not much loose.
The materials for kebaya are varied, ranging from silky fine fabrics originating from the Middle East and China which are the choice of all noblewoman, to ordinary textiles or lurik-like woven fabrics at affordable prices.
During the Dutch colonial period, the customs brought by all Chinese traders - especially those who were influenced by Portuguese customs and had stopped in Malacca - enriched the appearance of the kebaya through the selection of more transparent materials and the use of many embroidery techniques called krancang (overlay embroidery). The lower limit of the kebaya is also shortened, with the final cutout tapered in front. This popular kebaya model is called encim kebaya, fashionable and full of color, favored by ladies and ladies of Indo-Dutch and Chinese descent.

Furthermore, the design of the kebaya develops according to the identity of the wearer. Kebaya used by R.A. Kartini fits in with her global prowess and her degree as regent's daughter and wife. Kartini not infrequently appears concise with long kebaya covered in matte finish embroidered with gold ribbon, accompanied by rows of gold coins as her jewelery. This kind of kebaya is also used by all married wives and daughters, while in those days ordinary people imitated it to perform on special days like marriage.
