Description
Japanese walking is a simple interval training method: walk fast for three minutes, then slow for three minutes, and repeat five times. Researchers at Shinshu University found it builds more aerobic fitness, more leg strength, and better blood pressure than just aiming for 10,000 steps a day. It's simple enough to do on any street, in any park, with nothing but a decent pair of shoes.
This app is built entirely around the Japanese walking method, and not much else.
Once you start a Japanese walking session, it walks you through five rounds of fast and slow pace, telling you out loud when to switch and buzzing your phone so you're not staring at the screen every few minutes. You can pick whether you want to start on a fast or slow interval, and there's a live notification running in the background the whole time — round number, time left, pause or stop, all from your lock screen or notification shade. If you have to cut a Japanese walking session short, you still get a summary of what you managed.
The default follows the classic 3-minute Japanese walking protocol. If you want to stretch that to 5 minutes, or shorten it to 1, Premium lets you adjust the interval length freely instead of sticking to the fixed timing.
Past the timer itself, the app keeps a record of what you're actually doing — your current streak, the last seven days at a glance, a summary after every walk, and a calendar you can look back through. Calories are calculated from your real weight, not a generic estimate, and there's a weight log so you can watch the trend over weeks and months rather than guessing.
You set up a short profile once — gender, birth date, height, weight — and the app uses that for the calorie numbers. Pick a time of day you usually walk and it'll remind you, gently, only if you want it to. There's a dark theme for early mornings or evening walks, and the whole thing is available in nine languages.
If you're curious about why Japanese walking works and not just how to time it, there's a short six-part guide built into the app explaining the science behind alternating pace, and how to get more out of each session as you go.
No ads, anywhere in the app. Free to use, with weekly, yearly, or lifetime Premium if you want the custom interval lengths.
Japanese walking isn't about hitting a step count — it's about the change in pace. Three minutes pushing yourself, three minutes recovering, and your heart and lungs end up working harder over the same half hour than they would at one steady speed. That's the entire method, and it's why Japanese walking has spread as far as it has this year.
If you've been walking the same route at the same pace for a while and want to try Japanese walking for yourself, this is a straightforward place to start.
