Description
Pipo runs forward and never stops. You have exactly one decision to make: when to jump.
Tap and he jumps. Hold and he jumps higher. Tap again in mid-air for a double jump. Land on an enemy and you squash it and bounce off. That is everything you need to learn, and you learn it on the first try.
One finger, anywhere on the screen, either hand.
THREE HEARTS, NOT ONE
A single spike used to end the run. With enemies, power-ups and worlds that keep changing, that turned into punishment. With lives it turns into a race: you start with three, five is the cap, and loose hearts around the map give one back.
Falling into a pit costs a heart and drops you on the nearest platform AHEAD of you, never back onto the same hole you fell through. Respawning on top of the problem would be a trap, not a second chance.
NINE WORLDS THAT LOOK AND PLAY DIFFERENTLY
Every so often the world changes, announced by a banner. And it is not just the colour: the sky, the ground, what grows around you, which hazards show up and how often — all of it changes.
• MEADOW — the opening one, a violet and pink dusk. A little of everything. • DESERT — plenty of pits, and the hoppers arrive. • SNOW — more trampolines, and chasers that hunt your altitude. • CAVE — dark, full of crystals and spikes. • VOLCANO — the hardest: nearly every enemy at once. • SKY — gaps everywhere and trampolines to cross them. • RUINS — where the turrets plant themselves and shoot from a distance. • FOG — here the difficulty is not seeing what is coming. • SCRAP — the last and the busiest. Everything there is, together.
All nine cycle in order and start over, each lap a little heavier. With a ceiling: without one, the fifth lap would be impossible rather than hard.
FOUR POWER-UPS
You grab them as orbs and they last a while. Each changes something different:
• SHIELD — absorbs one hit. It does not expire: it is spent when used. • MAGNET — pulls sparks and gems from a distance. Not hearts, not power-ups: if it pulled everything, there would be no decisions left. • GLIDE — hold in mid-air and you drift down slowly. • DASH — almost double speed, invulnerable, and it flattens whatever it touches.
SIX ENEMIES, AND ONE YOU CANNOT STOMP
The Buzzer floats and never even looks at you. The Hopper moves in short jumps. The Chaser flies toward your altitude and is the most annoying of the lot. The Ghost fades in and out, and while it is transparent it neither hurts you nor can be stomped. The Turret does not move and shoots from far away, but it warns you first.
And the Shell, its back covered in spikes: that one you do not stomp. You take it out with the Dash or you dodge it, and that is what makes it different rather than just tougher.
THE CONTROLS ARE FORGIVING ON PURPOSE
You can still jump just after leaving a ledge. You can tap just before landing and the jump still comes out. Low steps are climbed for you. None of this is announced on screen: you feel it, and it is the difference between a fair game and one that punishes you over milliseconds.
IT ALSO PLAYS IN SILENCE
Sound, vibration and effects turn off separately. And there are three options for anyone who needs them: reduced flashing, reduced shake and reduced particles. None of them change the rules of the game, only how much the screen moves.
