RefundJapan: Tax-free Refund

RefundJapan helps travelers in Japan plan their shopping and get ready for the tax-free refund.
Note: Not an official app of the Government of Japan or its agencies. Provided by a private company.

From November 1, 2026, Japan's consumption tax exemption for visitors changes to a "refund method". At tax-free shops you first pay the tax-included price; after customs confirms your purchases when you leave Japan, the consumption tax amount is refunded. RefundJapan follows this new flow and brings what to do before you buy, when you buy, and at the airport into one app.

- Add items you like from curated shopping lists to your own list
- Organize what you want to buy before your trip

[Search]
- Find products by category, brand or keyword
- Pick or take a photo to find similar products. The photo is sent to our server only to search, and is not stored
- See key ingredients, how to use and size on product pages (when available)

[Map]
- Find drugstores and other shops on the map, with tax-free details where available
- Allow location access to find shops near you (used only while the app is in use; the app also works without it)

[Tax refund]
- A step-by-step guide: Buy, Register, Airport, Refund
- Take a photo of your receipt after shopping to keep a record. Receipt text is read by an external AI service (Google's Gemini API). A confirmation screen appears before anything is sent, and you can enter the total yourself if you decline
- Save the name, email address and phone number you are asked for when registering for the refund on your device, and tap to copy and paste them
- At the airport, follow the order of customs confirmation, check-in and security, with a list of what to bring
- The app does not ask for or store your passport number

[No account needed]
Lists, search, maps and the tax refund guide work without an account. With an account (sign in with a code sent to your email; no password), your lists and records are also saved to our server. You can delete your account inside the app.
