Real Bike Sounds

Every other engine sound app plays you a recording. This one builds the sound.

Real Bike Sounds stores each bike as its engine's numbers: how many cylinders it has, the crank angles they fire at, its idle and its redline. A crank turns in software, and every time it passes a firing angle the app sends a pressure pulse into a model of that bike's exhaust. Nothing is a clip. Nothing is looped.

That is why the throttle works.

A recording can only be sped up, and speeding it up drags the exhaust resonances up with the pitch. It is why sample based apps go thin and nasal at the top of the rev range. Here a real pipe rings at the same frequencies however fast the engine turns, so the pulse rate climbs and the exhaust stays put. Which is what an actual engine does.

HOLD TO REV

One big grip across the bottom of the screen. Press it and the engine gathers revs, tails off toward the redline, and stutters when it hits the limiter, because the limiter cuts the spark rather than pretending. Let go and you get the overrun crackle on the way back down.

The phone pulses in time with the firing too, so a lumpy engine feels lumpy in your hand. A big single at idle is thirteen separate thumps a second and you feel every one.

That is not a promotion we plan to withdraw. Because the sound is generated from numbers rather than recorded, adding a bike costs us a few lines of arithmetic instead of a day in a studio with a real machine. There is nothing here to charge for.

TURN ANY ENGINE INTO YOUR RINGTONE

Pick a bike, pick what it should be doing, pick how long, and save it as your ringtone, alarm or notification tone.

Idle. Throttle blips. A pull all the way to the limiter. Held against the rev cut. Three seconds or thirty. The clip does not exist until you ask for it, so you are not picking from a list of files somebody recorded. No other app here can do that, because they only have the clip they made.

HEAR WHY TWO BIKES SOUND ALIKE

Put a Yamaha MT-07 next to a Ducati Panigale V2, lock them to the same revs, and switch between them.

They sound related, and the app shows you why: a parallel twin with its crank pins 270 degrees apart splits the four stroke cycle 270 then 450, which is exactly what a 90 degree Ducati does. Different engines, identical rhythm.

WHAT WE WILL NOT PRETEND

The firing angles, capacities, idle speeds and redlines are published manufacturer figures for the generation named on each bike, which is why the year is part of the name. Those decide the rhythm and the pitch you hear.

The exhaust resonances are our own judgement about how a given pipe sounds. They are not measurements, and the app says so on every bike page rather than implying it all came off a dyno.
