Brilliant app, I have been using it for years. I love the different map layers, it's great for places that are usually difficult to find maps for. Easy to track walks and export/share them. It's a shame it's being discontinued for a rubbish version designed only to get more money out of you by taking everything good about View Ranger and only letting it be used in subscription pro mode. I will unfortunately be looking for a new app when this one dies, and it will NOT be Outdoor active.

View ranger is a fine App & support has always been fast, professional & very friendly. App is 100% reliable on the trail. Because it is functionally rich it can take a bit of learning to get best from it, but it can be optimized for minimum battery usage. Easy to download to use offline. You can install on a 2nd device meaning you can carry a complete mirror copy of your maps, routes etc. on a 2nd device, mostly negating any need to carry backup paper maps in case of primary device failure. Sadly Outdoor active have acquired? View ranger. The Outdoor active app licensing model means you can only use on a single device. View ranger users will hang onto the app as long as it stays alive. They will only migrate to the functionally poorer social media offering from Outdoor active if no better App surfaces to replace the excellent View ranger.

I've tried various gps apps over several years and for me, this is has been the one to go for. Very comprehensive and reliable. The 1:50,000 O. S. maps have been excellent value and when I visit a new area I've bought more maps. Sadly having bougt many maps it looks like I've been sold out. Loyal View Ranger users are expected to move on to a new app. Outdoor Active where maps already bought can not be used, and an expensive subscription is required to access similar maps. A sad loss.

Update Oct 2021 - View ranger now completely removed the map shop. They should have given the option to buy the whole country in OS maps not just sold individual tiles in the last few weeks. Outdoor active is not user-friendly and isn't really suited to offline use in areas where there's no phone signal ie in mountains. Have used View ranger since it was first created. It was the best product. Looks as though I'll definitely have to look for a new mapping source!
