Vtypes is a keyboard you talk to. Hold the button, say the sentence, and the finished text appears in whatever you were already typing in — a message, a note, a search box, an email.
There are two ways to run it. Bring your own API key and every dictation goes straight from your phone to the provider you chose, free and unmetered. Or subscribe to Vtypes Cloud and there is no key to obtain at all: the speech model and the tidying afterwards run on our servers, on our accounts.
WHAT IT DOES
• Dictates into any app that accepts text, as an ordinary Android keyboard.
• Writes it properly: punctuation, capitalisation, and the ums and false starts taken out.
• Tones you switch between on the keyboard — a plain message, an email, notes, or a prompt you write yourself.
• A vocabulary list for the names and terms speech models keep mangling.
• A hundred dictation languages, or auto-detect.
• Recent dictations kept on the phone, clearable whenever you like.
BRING YOUR OWN KEY — FREE
Vtypes carries no speech model of its own, so on the free tier it cannot dictate until you add a key. It works with:
• Speech to text — Groq, OpenAI, or any OpenAI-compatible endpoint.
• Tidying the text afterwards — Groq, OpenAI, OpenRouter, Anthropic, or any OpenAI-compatible endpoint.
Several of these have a free tier that covers ordinary daily use. Setup is one screen: paste the key, press Test, start dictating. Nothing about this tier is metered, capped, or reduced to make the subscription look better.
VTYPES CLOUD — THE SUBSCRIPTION
If you would rather not deal with an API key, Vtypes Cloud is the alternative: dictation with nothing to sign up for elsewhere and nothing to paste in. It is the one part of Vtypes that costs us to run, which is why it is the one part that is sold.
PRIVACY
On your own key, your audio and your text go to the provider you configured, authenticated with your key, and nowhere else — we operate nothing in that path.
On Vtypes Cloud, your audio reaches us, because that is what the subscription is. We forward it to our speech and language providers and return the text. We do not store your audio, your transcript, or the text we send back; what we keep is how many seconds your subscription has used and how many requests it has made.
Either way: no account, no telemetry, no analytics, no ads, no advertising ID. Keys, settings and history stay on the phone.
Reading the field you are dictating into — which is what lets the model finish a half-written sentence sensibly — stays off until you turn it on. It never reads a password field, it skips any app you put on the exclusion list, and card-shaped numbers and lines labelled as secrets are stripped out on the phone before anything is sent.

WORTH KNOWING
Vtypes has no letter keys. It is a dictation keyboard rather than a replacement for the one you have, so keep your usual keyboard enabled and switch between the two when you need to type by hand.
Vtypes is also a desktop application for Windows, with the same bring-your-own-key approach: https://vtypes.com
Recent changes:
Vtypes now runs on Android 16 and uses the current Google Play billing system, so subscriptions and restores stay reliable on the newest phones.
The app also draws to the edges of the screen on every Android version now, instead of only the newest ones.
No changes to dictation, styles, vocabulary or languages — everything you have set up stays exactly as it was.
